Net Zero job filled
David Shankey has been appointed as the first CEO of the Net Zero Economy Authority, a new body driving Australia’s transition to a low-carbon future.
His appointment comes after the Government’s Future Made in Australia legislation passed Parliament, a major move to position Australia as a global leader in net zero innovation.
Shankey, an expert in energy and climate policy, is expected to help ensure that workers, industries, and communities share the benefits of decarbonisation.
The Authority, a central element of the Government’s Future Made in Australia agenda, will work with regional communities, governments, unions, industry leaders, investors, and First Nations groups to capitalise on the economic opportunities of global decarbonisation. Shankey will collaborate closely with Chair Dr Iain Ross AO, alongside an independent board to be appointed soon.
“We are home to every metal and critical mineral essential to net zero. Our workforce is skilled, our safety standards are the highest, and we have a proven track record as a reliable energy exporter,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
“The Net Zero Economy Authority is key to unlocking our potential as a renewable energy superpower.”
Assistant Minister Tim Ayres has stressed the role of the Authority in supporting regional growth.
“By building industrial capability to tackle challenges like the transition to net zero, we will create secure and meaningful jobs as power stations close and industries change,” he said.
