Who is South West Aboriginal Medical Services?

SWAMS is a Not-for-Profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation founded on the principles of self-determination, empowerment, and freedom of choice. We recognise the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. Our mission is to deliver best-practice and culturally appropriate holistic health services to the Indigenous population of the South-West region of Western Australia.

With a dedicated team of 230 staff, our main clinic is located in Bunbury, and outreach clinics in Manjimup, Busselton, Brunswick, Collie, Narrogin, and Katanning. We are excited that SWAMS has future expansion plans, including the development of a state-of-the-art Health Hub facility in Bunbury.

About the role of Senior Medical Officer (SMO)

Our new SMO will be someone who wants to make a difference in Aboriginal health. You will join an experienced and supportive team including General Practitioners, Primary Health Nurses, Child Health Nurses, Midwives, Chronic Condition Nurses, Mental Health and Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners.

The SMO is responsible for leadership of our General Practitioners, including staff performance Management and workforce coordination. Working closely with the Director of Health and Social Services, the SMO will lead our clinical governance practices and provide medical care to clients of the South West Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd.

This role provides a good balance of client facing activity and other SMO related tasks. SWAMS is a family focussed organisation therefore we are open to discussing both full time and part time hours for this position.

The SMO role is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for work/life balance. SWAMS hours are from 8:45 am to 5:06 pm Monday to Friday and a Thursday evening clinic (Bunbury only) until 8 pm that is covered on a rotational basis. There is no weekend or on-call work. SWAMS has a dedicated team of Health professionals that coordinate clinical services in Manjimup, Collie, Busselton, Brunswick, Narrogin and Katanning. The SMOs knowledge, leadership and guidance will be paramount in continuously improving these services to our regional based community members.

What you bring

Along with having an understanding and passion for working with Aboriginal culture, values and health issues your experience will include:

  • Unrestricted AHPRA Registration as a General Practitioner
  • 5 years’ experience in community GP or practice, post fellowship
  • Team leadership, management and training experience

While not essential, it is highly desirable for candidates to possess knowledge and experience in Aboriginal Medical Service, Medicare billing practices and maintaining General Practice Accreditation.
