State and territory taxpayers could soon fund a larger share of major infrastructure projects.

Queensland, South Australia, and the ACT have reportedly signed five-year deals that shift the funding split for “national significance” projects from 80:20 to 50:50.

The agreements, which have not been officially disclosed, were allegedly initiated by Federal Transport Minister Catherine King.

They would replace the expired National Partnership Agreement on Land Transport Infrastructure Projects and are expected to run until 2029.

These deals - rebranded as Federal Funding Agreements - will reportedly be joined by a nationwide commitment to sharing road death and trauma data.

South Australia was allegedly the first to sign on, and Queensland’s Transport Minister Bart Mellish confirmed his state's participation with reporters but does not appear to have provided any further details.

Other states, including New South Wales, are reportedly close to finalising similar deals.
