Nurses call for new rules to amputate bad bosses
Two Queensland Health executives have been taken off duty and referred to the corruption watchdog over “employment procurement issues”, and nurses say it is time for a change.
The Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) made the call after two Metro North Health Board executives were stood aside and referred to the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).
It is still unclear what the pair are specifically accused of doing, and the QNU says that is part of the problem.
“We have got concerns about the governance arrangements for the hospital and health services,” QNU spokesperson Beth Mohle said.
“We think that the system is far too lax.
“Indeed government doesn't have sufficient levers to ensure the hospital and health services are doing what government wants them to do on behalf of the taxpayers of Queensland and that is critical.”
Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has told Parliament that more information must be given to avoid further suspicion.
“Given the Health Minister has said nothing more than the issue relates to employment ... procurement contracts, is this just another example of jobs for the boys and contracts for mates?” she asked the House.
She has continued her call for new CCC chairman Ken Levy too be replaced, as she believes he is too close to the Government to assess allegations inside Queensland Health.
“This chair does not have bipartisan support. Now we have a matter referred by the health department to the CCC - this is Caesar judging Caesar,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
The calls come just days after the Queensland Opposition called for an inquiry into claims that there have been 33 serious incidents at the Rockhampton Hospital since 2011.
