The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has announced that Murray Green, the Director of ABC International, will be stepping down from the position on March 30, ending a 24-year career in public broadcasting.

“While the ABC will mark his departure at the appropriate time, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Murray for his outstanding service to the national broadcaster, the work we do and the audiences we serve. He represents the very best the ABC has to offer in terms of his depth of talent and knowledge and his ability to fulfil a number of quite varied senior roles across the organisation. Murray’s career also encapsulates the very national nature of the ABC,” ABC’s Managing Director, Mark Scott, said in a statement.

Mr Green began his career with the ABC as a manager of what has become 720 ABC Perth, before being appointed to State Manager Radio Victoria.

He later became State Director for Victoria. For a decade, Mr Green chaired the Election Coverage Review Committee and was appointed as the ABC’s inaugural Complaints Review Executive. In 2006, Mr Green was appointed Director Corporate Strategy and Communications, which included responsibility for the state and territory directors.

The Federal Government’s decision to permanently award the Australia Network to the ABC is broadly viewed as one of Mr Green’s enduring legacies.

“Murray has informed me that with this breakthrough, Radio Australia well into a process of renewal, and ABC International Development expanding its role, it is an opportune time to bring in a new leader to knit more closely together all the work of ABC International,” Mr Scott.
