Grants change goes live
The federal Department of Finance has announced new grant rules are now in effect.
The Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles 2024 (CGRPs) have officially come into force, which the government says is a significant step in strengthening the integrity, accountability, and transparency of Australia’s grants administration.
The revised guidelines include several key updates aimed at enhancing oversight across all stages of grant allocation.
Under these new rules, officials face increased obligations when providing briefings to ministers who have approval authority over grants.
Additionally, there are now expanded reporting requirements, particularly regarding the use of GrantConnect when ministers are directly involved in approving grants.
A notable emphasis has been placed on promoting transparency in cases where parliamentarians or third parties are engaged in the grants process.
Further reforms include a clarification of criteria for the use of one-off ad hoc grants, which are now subject to stricter standards to ensure fairness and consistency.
Additionally, the introduction of two new principles underscores the importance of merit-based processes and conformity to established grant guidelines.
These changes are part of broader efforts to enhance public trust in the government’s management of grants.
