New funding has been opened to funnel kids into defence STEM jobs. 

The Federal Government has announced a new initiative to boost Australia’s Defence industry workforce, focusing on students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 

The $11 million Schools Pathways Program: Open Competitive Grant Opportunity aims to build a skilled workforce to meet the needs of the national Defence sector.

Eligible organisations can apply for grants between $150,000 and $2 million to fund activities promoting Defence career pathways and STEM education.

Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, Pat Conroy, says he hopes the program encourages more students to pursue careers in Defence-related fields. 

The initiative includes professional development for teachers and support for parents to guide their children towards STEM careers. 

“This Government is committed to developing the defence industry skills we need for a future made in Australia,” Conroy said, calling the program “a great example of how the Government is accelerating investment” in a skilled workforce.

This new grant opportunity builds on the $5.1 million already committed through agreements with South Australia and Western Australia. 

Applications for funding will open in early September 2024, with full details available on the government’s official website.
