APS skills to update
New programs should allow the Australian Public Service (APS) to better tackle future challenges.
Three new professional streams have been created, covering procurement and contract management, evaluation, and complex project management.
The APS says it has been working to build expertise in these areas as part of a broader government plan to enhance the capability of the public sector.
This development is part of the Albanese Government’s efforts to modernise the APS, in line with public expectations.
Dr Gordon de Brouwer, Australian Public Service Commissioner, has appointed six senior leaders to oversee the professional streams.
These appointees are tasked with embedding specialised skills across the APS workforce.
Richard Windeyer and Julia Pickworth will lead the procurement and contract management stream, while Dr Shane Johnson and Pia Andrews will oversee evaluation. Chris Deeble and Dr Liz Develin will head the complex project management stream.
The Evaluation stream is set to focus on strengthening the APS’s ability to conduct rigorous impact assessments, including the use of randomised trials.
The broader aim of the APS Professions model is to ensure the public service is equipped to adapt to future developments in government operations.
Assistant Minister Patrick Gorman says the new streams will be important to addressing emerging challenges.
“The new APS Professions are an investment in the people who deliver policy and programs that benefit Australians,” he said.
Gorman encouraged APS employees to take advantage of these professional development opportunities, describing them as a chance to build expertise in high-demand areas while advancing their careers.
