ABOUT THE ROLE

The Media and Communications Manager is a senior role at AFL Tasmania, responsible for championing and spreading the excitement of football throughout the state.

As a member of AFL Tasmania’s senior leadership team and the national Corporate Affairs team, the Media and Communications Manager is responsible for leading the media engagement, public relations, communications, content, issues management and corporate affairs strategy for the AFL in Tasmania, with one direct report. The role will focus on supporting Game Development, Talent Pathways and local football, to protect and enhance the brand of the game in Tasmania.

At a time when Tasmanian football is experiencing a generational opportunity to flourish, the position will play a key role in proactively sharing the excitement building with the advent of the Tasmanian Football Club, storytelling through owned and earned channels and driving the media footprint of Tasmania’s new community football model.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF
Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop strong relationships with all key media, including regional, metropolitan and multicultural media, to maximise coverage and awareness of the code, its programs and competitions (elite and community); 
  • Oversee all internal and external PR channels and identify opportunities to proactively promote the code across both elite and community level
  • Media Liaison – be the central point of contact for media seeking information about Australian rules football at all levels, from grassroots programs to talent pathways and AFL, in Tasmania
  • Issues Management – Provide crisis and issues support; develop strategy, train staff, be a member of the issues management team and provide advice on managing all communication regarding each issue with media, stakeholders and staff;
  • Building strong working relationships across football community and local media
  • Media Releases, Media Events – research, write and distribute media releases in line with key business objectives and the calendar of programs across the state. Target all areas of the media including general news, government, education, in addition to sport;
  • Lead Content staff member to execute digital media content across platforms to a high level
  • Drive the social and media footprint for Tasmania’s new Community Football model inclusive of new regional Premier Leagues and Representative Football
  • Provide affiliated associations with media support
  • Oversee the AFL Tasmania social media strategy and website
  • Support State body leader with any key internal and external communications
  • Support with delivery of AFL Tasmania and community football events
  • Manage local key media partnerships where applicable
  • Work closely with AFL Community Football media manager on national priorities and initiatives
  • Play a key role in the AFL Tasmania leadership team in supporting other leaders

  • Sound knowledge and experience of news and editorial management as well as understanding of the content requirements for news media, social media and online engagement strategies
  • Proven experience influencing senior leaders and stakeholders
  • Experience leading crisis and issues management with limited support
  • Leadership experience - working with leadership team to progress key issues and priorities
  • Ability to manage, maintain and develop partnerships with multiple key stakeholders
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans
  • Knowledge of the AFL or sporting industry particularly at a community level
